    Default U Indy 2019 Season

Interesting times for U Indy. New HC Keevers promoted within from defensive coordinator. He'll continue to work at it as hard as Bart did. New D Coordinator Cooper from U of Pitt that was the Quality Control guy at IU and Pitt. Schedule starting off with a bang. Top tier teams from the GLIAC and GMAC in Ashland and Hillsdale. Lots of young guys gonna be counted on this year. Gonna find out how good we'll be the next few years right away. Here's my take with just about three months to go until the 2019 season:

Worry spot is the young O Line. I was right about their All American Center leaving early. Believe he had a year of eligibility left but graduated so moving on. I was really hoping he'd stick around another year. I always think about all the guys that later dream of playing just one more year. Have a couple quick tackles so now they'll probably move a tackle to center. Also they lost 3-4 young O linemen leaving the program over a year. Hoping they went out and found a transfer like they did two years ago but Keevers commented they'll stick with inside development instead of D1 transfers.

Strong spot is the experienced D Line. Three of the four starters are big names in Indiana. Other lineman will be young or undersized but those three are very good. Don't care for how they rotate "guys they can use" on the d line but might see something different from the new coordinator. Gotta find an inside LB and two DBs. Getting some depth back at DB. Might see some repositioning here. Thought they struggled at CB last year.

QB is a big question this year. Guy with the most experience played two years ago which was the only year they haven't won their conference. Have a young gun slinger that's probably gonna get a shot. A handful of competent and reliable receivers, a big TE transfer from Eastern and at least H-Backs with some experience. RB is the strong area with two of the best combo I've seen. Their skilled WRs/RBs are also prolific return specialists. U Indy gonna be a threat whenever they get those skilled guys loose. Also even though they had a couple guys poached by D1s I really liked the incoming class they picked up.

Anybody out there? Just over a month until the first game v Ashland.

This year Ashland's strength is there defense - think I remember seeing 6 returners that made the All-GLIAC defense team if you count HM guys. But also their QB was the GLIAC Frosh POY - and he can punt which means U Indy's Daveon Bell might not get any returns when Ashland lines up their offense on 4th down. U Indy with a "new" HC and DC so should see some new wrinkles from them. Think the outcome of the game will come down to whether U Indy can pass good enough to open up the run - or not. If U Indy can run the ball Ashland won't get many opps on offense. Ashland wants to pass. U Indy wants to run. If either team can do so I think it will be an easy win for that team rather than a tight one.

Think I was at the last U Indy game at Ashland. Be ready for the cannon to fire when Ashland scores - its way too loud to be that close to the visitor seats. U Indy fans showed up for that one. Remember we were surprised at the crowd and counted over 1,000 on the visitor side. Go Hounds

I think you're going to find out about your QB and OL situation real quick in this game.

UIndy absolutely deserves the benefit of the doubt here, coming off the most successful season by any GLVC team in history. Keevers stepping in has been a mainstay with the program for 25 years, so there should be some sense of familiarity in terms of how the team is run.

    But....

Changing coaches, loosing a senior QB and most of the OL, well that's a lot of change...and a tough first opponent to have to test the waters against. Even if Keevers has been around forever, a change from a legend in coach Bartolomeo is still a change.

Indy will have to rely on their defensive front to get some pressure on Brenner and force him into mistakes.

Even with arguably the best 1-2 combo backfield in all of D2, I don't see the UIndy offense clicking right away with so much change on the interior and a new QB. I know they'll want to force the issue, but AU has a lot of talent and experience coming back and will probably try to force the new QB (whoever it is) to beat them.

Speaking of which... who do you feel has the edge in the QB race? 5th year senior Stancombe or one of the RS Freshman, Mills or Leffew?

Not sure about the QB. 5th Yr Sr Stancombe was mentioned on Media day. RSFrosh Misner is a passer with no experience. Gonna find out a lot the first two games - Ashland and Hillsdale. Don't think they'll enter conference play with two Ls.

Perusing the rosters... see that UIndy has a few D1 transfers.

Nick Giles- Senior defensive back out of Ball State
Jordon Peterson- Sophomore defensive back out of University of Indiana
Ryan Guhl- Junior defensive lineman out of Illinois Sate

Getting some help in the defensive backfield could make the UIndy defense pretty stout with adding some depth to an already deep DL (Patch, Schmatz, Weathers) and one of the best returning linebackers in the league in Lambright.

The front 6 will be tough! Parsans moves to the middle and Lambright with 228 tackles the last two years will again be a major factor in leading the defense. The secondary should be stronger with the transfers the D could be stronger then LY.

So many questions! Who's the new OLB? Will either transfer be a starter at CB? What about the front 5 - offense?? That's the big question along with the QB.

No transfers where they need them - the offensive line.

I believe Kiave Guerrier will be the OLB and will do well. OL will be fine. The QB Bryce Stancomb played the final 5 games as a red shirt Freshman. He entered season as the backup QB before starting the final five weeks after an injury to Jake Purichia … finished with 1,140 passing yards, nine touchdowns and only one interception threw at least one TD in all five starts while avoiding an INT in his final 157 passes of the season.
