After reading this, I really now could see UST joining the WIAC even though they would be the ugly sister in the conference (only out of state and private school). Would rather have then join the NSIC but UST would do very well in the wiac. Just hope they don’t rename the conference like they did in Iowa.

$11.75 million. Is there a ranking somewhere so I can see where we slot in among D1 schools? Because I know that's more than some D1 schools. We are a very large athletics department with a total of 20 sports, though. (Used to be 23).

Never seen all these numbers for comparison. Thanks Stanger.

I assume Mankato, Duluth, St Cloud, and Bemidji include D1 hockey budgets so you have to take that into account. Those numbers would still be well below what the bottom of the Summit league spends for athletics.

So what is tuition nowadays? It was roughly 5k a semester when I was in school while living in the dorms, I believe 3200 for full time student per semester when living off campus. This was 10 years to 5 years ago.
The reason I bring this up is if tuition we're to be raised by MSU 500 per student per year you make up an 8mil difference to put MAU at the level of SDSU. That's not taking into consideration donations. Or am I missing something here?
I would have most definitely paid another 250 a semester if the school was D1. Hell I would have paid that for the athletics I was lucky to see while in school

So, basically...thia shows us how close our top four really are to be fully capable of making the move correct?

Most of them are still a ways off. I think to be competitive, the goal would be in the $15 million range at worst, which still puts you at the bottom of the Dakota schools. When you take hockey out of the equation (since those other schools don't have it), the three non-Augies still need to double what they're at now.

No surprise, but the budget rankings follow pretty closely with the All-Sports standings for the last 5 years. Here are the average finishes by school over the last 5 years. Winona has outperformed their budget and Upper Iowa has underperformed (I was really surprised their athletic budget was as high as it is), but most others are about where you would expect. Crookston will always finish last as they offer fewer sports than anyone else.

    School AVG
    Augie 1.4
    Mankato 1.6
    Winona 2.8
    Duluth 4.6
    SCSU 4.6
    USF 5.8
    Northern 8.2
    Moorhead 8.6
    Mary 9
    Concordia 10
    SMSU 10.8
    Wayne 11.8
    Upper Iowa 12.4
    Minot 13.4
    Bemidji 14.6
    Crookston 16

A couple things stick out about UIU....

Football has the fifth-most expenses in the conference
It's a small budget, but UIU is one of only two schools that have a men's soccer team.
Wrestling budget only trails St Cloud.
They pour a lot of money into the smaller sports. Tennis, softball, both men's and women's golf are a few that stand out.

I'm not saying it happens, but the fear of how much it will cost and all that just shows it really isnt that much. Augie is already at almost the same as Western Illinois who does just fine. So if I'm an Augie football fan (I know, wrong thread) I'm not too worried of having to go non-scholarship, only ones who have to watch out are the non-revenue sports.

Depending on the school size tuition could be raised what I would personally deem small, to bring the budget up to SDSU standards, which would be a fine starting goal for success at D1 level

Western Illinois is not doing fine.

They have considered but rejected reclassifying to Division II.

Like zimmy said, SDSU is a more appropriate target, especially since it's the same area.

Chicago st. is the school in Illinois that really needs to move down to D2.

Question, is it possible for a university to move straight down from D1 to D3?
