It will take a lot more than one sentence to get that type of topic going.

Hopefully they can recover and maintain their position. Always viewed WJU and Wheeling as NDC's (and maybe even Urbana's) connector/gateway to the rest of the MEC.

Wheeling Jesuit just declared 'financial exigency.'

That is higher education speak for 'we are about to cut programs and fire faculty members.'

But, in Jesuit's case, I believe the Society of Jesus will likely just throw more cash at the school to solve the problem.

The diocese threw millions at them to keep their heads above water just a couple of years ago and now this? There have also been rumors that the continuing financial difficulties have put their future accreditation in question. Wouldn't make sense to cut athletics since that accounts for nearly half of their student body after bringing football on board. Tough situation and no easy solution but it would be a major blow to the city, the valley and the MEC if they can't figure a way out of this.

There clearly is some systemic cost that is driving this recuring financial instability. Don't know what it is but they need to figure it out and address it. I remember hearing that enrollment was up so that doesnt appear to be the problem. Perhaps they are driving their enrollment increase with deep tuition discounts or maybe they are paying their staff way above market value or maybe they have been overly ambitious on their facility improvement program...or perhaps its a combination. Whatever it is, they need to figure it out!!

Honestly, as an active alum, I really don't understand where this came from.

Applications are up. Enrollment is up. Donations are up. Cost cutting has been done for the past four years, in fact I'm pretty sure the budget was in the black or close to it last year. The faculty is already underpaid and with a growing number of cheap adjuncts. The debt was just restructured and partially bought out by the diocese. This makes no sense.

Personally, with the stupid bull**** the admin have pulled this past year, it would not surprise me if this is just the administration trying to find a way to fire tenured faculty after they sued the university and board of trustees for completely rewriting faculty contracts, pay scales, and the faculty handbook without faculty approval last year. But they can't be that stupid to do this for a petty reason during an accreditation review.

And go figure, that the same week we celebrate being the runner-up for the wrestling national championship, we make this announcement. I can't wait to see how this destroys next years enrollment.

There has to be some fiscal mismanagement somewhere at that school. If applications are up and enrollment is up then there can’t be any other reason things are going south. Can this have something to do with Sancomb’s lawsuit against the university that he is bound to win given how he was terminated??

The dumbest thing West Lib ever did was push for those bums to be included in the MEC.

    Yup...

I understand why they did it but hindsight being 20/20, it hasn't panned out well at all.

They were successful in 16 of 20 sports before football... they had poor management throughout the campus..

Why did wlu want Wju -

Wju and wlu needed each other to keep media interest and community involvement... having various stories weekly covering both schools keeps the casual fan engaged and coming to games...

in Charleston, when wvu tech left the Wviac , the media decreased at state and uc; overall coverage declined and the 40-50 casual sports fans you would see at different venues for the various schools decreased drastically... this drastically effected the Wviac and MEC tournaments at the civic center...

Same happened in central part of wv, when AB-DE were left out, there were some die hard small college hoops fans you would see anywhere from fairmont-Salem-ab-GSC-wvwc-De games through out the winter..

they are all gone now and schools are relying on alumni for more and more or ticket giveaways...

I am not sure where the MEC will look... maybe seton hill will return now that the longest trip will be to concord for each sport instead of concord and wise...

WRONG. West Lib does not need Jesuit. West Lib already gets way more media coverage than Jesuit and Bethany.

    agreed

    It’s not about amount

It’s for the casual fan - well - it used to be...

Last 10 years - social media and demographic have changed

There's zero chance of Seton Hill coming back. Less than zero, actually. They are centrally located in the PSAC West. Light travel. After a decade they are finally making some rivalries in numerous sports.

Yes but WLU and WJU are rivals. The desire on WLU's part in having WJU as a full member of the MEC was to maintain that rivalry which was good for both schools. In exchange for full membership, WJU made a commitment to start a football program. Shame on WLU and the MEC for not getting a set in stone time line from WJU because it pretty quickly became apparent that they really didn't want to start a football program and would have drug their feet forever if given a chance.

That's good...Don't really want them back. We have our own soup sandwich now in D&E.

lol .... YEP. Know the feeling.

Seton Hill does have some good 'non publicity' sports. Their baseball is very good and women's basketball/volleyball is strong.

That said, their football program is an embarrassment. Men's basketball has had some years of at least being respectable.

What in the name of the hilltop has West Liberty been good at except one random football year and basketball. Really nothing else is relevant. Wrestling has fallen off. Wait my wife just said Acro. Really honey Acro!

In MEC team sports aggregate, WLU teams stand at 106 wins and 76 defeats...Aggregate winning percentages - WLU .582

Don't know who you pull for, but as this is a WJU related thread, WJU stands at 74 wins and 100 losses in MEC sponsored sports. Winning % of .425

In H-to-H matchups, WLU currently leads WJU 7 wins to 5.

WLU has five teams that are or finished above .500 while WJU has two.

We were talking about D&E right before your comment so if that is who you were talking about, D&E teams stand at 32 and 92 for an aggregate winning percentage of .258. They have no teams that either finished at or currently stand at .500.

WLU Acro finished 2-4 while D&E Acro finished 1-4. WLU beat D&E in a critical mid season head to head barn burner 230.795 to 208.590.
