Former Commander of the US Central Command, former Commander of Joint US Forces Command, career Marine, and former SECDEF, "Warrior Monk", "Mad Dog", "CHAOS", and CWU alum Jim Mattis.

I know he didn't play football at CWU, thus my hesitation to post, but he is an amazing person and I wanted to get him on here as an alum.

He is known for publishing reading lists for the Marines under his command. He required his Marines to be well read on the culture and history of the regions in which they served, and before deployment to Iraq, he required his Marines undergo "cultural sensitivity training" in order to better understand what was going on.

I don't know if either of them played sports while in college, but current NFL on CBS rules analyst Gene Steratore (who, you may recall, was the ref at Super Bowl 52 last season) and current MLB umpire Alan Porter are both Cal U grads. We have a few Cal U grads in local media (Washington TV viewers residents may recognize Jim Lokay, the co-anchor at Fox 5 DC; he's a Cal U alum as well).

    That's pretty neat.

    Nah, it's good.

Personally speaking, I'm more interested in school affiliation more than anything. It's mostly just for a fun offseason discussion thread - so it's nothing I really feel the need to police too heavily.

If we are doing celebrities in general here is a few -

    MSU-Moorhead:
    -Hercules (Kevin Sorbo)
    -The Angry Orange

    Winona State:
-Michelle Bachmann (does she count as a celebrity?)

    Minnesota State:
    -Cedric Yarborough
    -Adrienne (Nesser) Armstrong

Adrienne Armstrong is the wife of Green Day lead singer Billie Joe. It's my understanding that she was the inspiration for a lot of his early music and touring habits, which ultimately kickstarted their 30 year+ career. The band would intentionally schedule their tours through the Mankato area to see her. I once saw an interview on MTV where the band said their favorite show they ever played was at a random farm-site near St. Peter. It's the stuff I find interesting!

I remember reading about him and seeing he went to CWU. Certainly a worthy addition to the thread!

David Rivera kicked for Missouri Western one year. He and his wife had an HGTV show called Rustic Rehab last fall. Not sure if it was picked up for another season. They were based in Paradise, California, which was devastated in the wildfires.

70s actor/singer David Soul went to Augustana. He's best known for his role as "Hutch" in "Starsky and Hutch" and for his hit song "Don't Give Up On Us."

    New Haven has a few:

Tony Sparano (RIP) - alum, former New Haven player, coach, and NFL coach

David Beckerman - Founded Starter, those jackets were really popular in the 80s and 90s.

Henry Lee - not an alum but was a founder of the university’s forensic science program.

Patrick Arnold (more infamous than famous) - developed the steroid preparations that were used by BALCO

Dean Lombardi - Former GM of the LA Kings

Steve Bedrosian - won the NL Cy Young Award in 1987

(Now I feel like I’m writing a Wikipedia article...)

Sharon Stone attended Edinboro in the mid-70s.

    Steelers STC Danny Smith.

Former Jacksonville Jags GM Gene Smith.

Former Orlando Magic GM Jack Swope.

Star Wars animated everything director Dave Filoni.

This is kind of a fun one, current University of San Diego President Jim Harris was an assistant football coach at Edinboro in the early 80s and got his master's in education along the way.

#11, not a good way to be on the list. General Mattis though is pretty high on the list. This is only Alumni, so Craig T Nelson doesn't make the cut.

It's a light-hearted offseason thread, so I'm using the term "D2" loosely. Some of these guys may have played NAIA with a current D2 school, or played D2 with a current FCS school - etc. "Celebrity" is subjective too.

    I'll start with a few:

Terry Funk - Texas A&M Commerce
Terry Funk attended West Texas State (Now West Texas A&M). He did not attend Texas A&M Commerce...
