    Default Panthers vs Huskies

Looking forward to making the trip up to Houghton this weekend, to see where the Panthers stack up against the GLIAC opp. If you read Riepma's blog, he thinks the Panthers have played 2 HS JV teams so far this year. Granted they haven't played D2 teams, but NAIA is scholarship bound football, and many can beat or compete in D2, and yes last weeks opp was a D3 team, but one of the best D3 teams in the country. That is like saying every FCS school in the country should demolish FSU or GVSU.

The exciting part of the game will be watching DU's defense. They are ranked first in the nation in total defense giving up just 111 yds per game so far. Have only given up 17 yards rushing, and MT has a excellent RB and WR. Will be interesting to see if DU can get to MT's QB, as the DL has been very good. 2 former D1 DE's and Calloway in the middle, make them tough. then Black and Williams are some the best DB's in the GLIAC, so excited to see how they perform against a GLIAC team this week, to see if Riepma is right. Offensively DU did not impress me last week, but they did lose their QB on the 2nd play of the game, so not sure if he will be ready or not, if not Hayden is serviceable and can manage the offense, but it is going to come down to the Defense keeping them close and in games. Not going to be easy, as they have to travel 8 1/2 hrs this week, and then turn around and do it again next week to Quincy, IL.

It will be tough, MT is 2-0 and coming off a great win against Hillsdale's ST blunders. They will be riding high. Should be fun.

Did Deondre Ford get hurt? Because the QB position has by far been the most lacking part of Davenport's team last year and so far this year. If Majewski remains the starter, I don't see them winning a game in the GLIAC this season. Which is a shame, because DU has talent at almost every other position.

He came out after a hit on the 2nd play last week, and had ice on his non-throwing hand. So to answer your question he got hurt, but it was his none throwing hand, not sure how severe. But you are correct he looks special, he can throw the ball, and run. Hopefully he will be back. If not then relying on Majewski and probably one of the true freshman as a backup.

I am looking forward to seeing DU in person for the 1st time. I hope there QB is healthy as well, without him this game will probably not be close.

I am hoping he is healthy as well, but if not I still think the game is closer than most would think. DU only lost last year to MT on ST let down. Their Def, was good last year, but did not have quality backups. Just watch their DE #6 Simmons -- he is legit. They are experience, even know they are only in their 3rd season, Sparky some how seems to lure in D1/Juco transfers to play at DU from all over the country. This team has 80 new faces... only 4-5 freshman playing -- 2 of them are Specialist. Offensively, you may be right, they will struggle if their #1 isn't playing, but I think their Defense will impress you.

You may be right. Although it seems as of right now MTU is a much better team overall than they were last year. DU Defense will probably be better than what Tech has seen so far but Tech's offense will be much much better than the two offenses DU has faced. The biggest difference being the Oline. I will also be surprised if DU can score more than 14 points on MTU's defense. my prediction, even if DU has there #1 QB is MTU-27 DU-14

MTU 7 D-Port 3 at half-time. Don't be surprised if Tech loses this one. They've had no running game in the first half. Minus 6 yards total!!

    D-port takes the lead in the 3rd Q, 10 - 7. Tech is self-destructing.

Tech found some pride and came from behind in the 4th to lead 21 - 10.

D-port gets a TD but misses the conversion attempt. Tech still up with 4.5 minutes left in the game, 21-16.

D-Port marches the length of the field and scores a touchdown with ten seconds left in the game. Congratulations to D-Port for picking up their first GLIAC win, 23-21.

The preseason posts about MTU being bad this season weren't wrong after all.

Next week at GV is going to be an unmitigated disaster for MTU. Tech is susceptible to the big play. Not to mention a rookie QB and pretty much only one RB. They just don't have the horses to compete with the Conference elite.

Which is just bizarre considering how consistently above average to good they have been for as long as I can remember. What happened?

Congrats to the Panthers! Most will say MT lost it, but what I saw was a Panther D that just keeps fighting. The Panthers were without starting QB and starting LB - Black. Feel good for the Powers kid, broke his leg at MT last year, today had 3 TD catches and the game winner! Go DU now off to Quincy! Start 4-0,

Congrats on the win. Sounds like they didn't quit and pulled out a tough road win.... but a .500 team? Against D2 competition? I'm not there.

dvaara was talking about MTU being a .500 team. You don't think they are?

Anyway, congrats to Davenport. First GLIAC win in program history.

Rhetorical question: If Tech cannot defeat D-port at home, who in the GLIAC can they beat?

MTU travels to GV, FSU, and AU. There's three (3) losses guaranteed.

NMU will host the Huskies. Northern hasn't won the Miner's Cup in so long that they forget what it looks like. You know they are very hungry for that trophy this year and my money is on them.

SVSU, Wayne, and Northwood play in Houghton. It is entirely realistic that Tech will falter in two (2) of those three games.

Tech is 2-1 right now. They are going 1-6 the rest of the way. My math says the final damage comes to 3-7 which is .300. That is a long way from .500.

Hate to be a pessimist, and hopefully I'm wrong, but several decades of following MTU football leads to this conclusion. If there is one undeniable fact in this situation, it is GLIAC football has become better and more competitive over the years and it takes better talent, both on the field and in the coaching office, to be playing for more than pride late in the season.

If Football had a larger and vocal fan base like Hockey does, the calls for regime change would be heard even up in the executive suite. We have a new President and most likely he is focused on the academic and financial pieces, which he should be, so he won't notice that his program is descending into a perpetual losing culture. I am hoping to live long enough to see another championship season for the Huskies but, alas, the calendar is not on my side.
