Default Slippery Rock football since 2016: the cold, hard facts

As a follow-up to what I posted in the Slippery Rock at Shippensburg game thread yesterday, I wanted to offer some facts to back up my argument that we will likely never compete for a PSAC West title with our current head coach. I can't say my claim about his awful decision-making (the debacle yesterday; the decision to throw four passes (all incomplete) with first-and-goal at the Kutztown 4 and under a minute to play last year) has cost us multiple wins is fact because that is subjective. So I looked through the last two years for some facts.

He has a fine overall record in two full years in charge (not counting the first two games of 2018 in any of this). Heck, even his record vs. teams with winning records and eventual playoff teams isn’t terrible (thanks, West Chester). But when you dig deeper, and dissect how our team has performed against Indiana, California and Edinboro over the last two years, it is not pretty.

    Overall record
    15-7 (.681)

Record vs. teams that finished with winning records
    4-5 (.444)
    • Wins vs. New Haven, West Chester (2) and California

Record vs. teams that qualified for the NCAA playoffs
    2-3 (.400)
    • Both wins in 2017 vs. West Chester and California

Record vs. Indiana, California and Edinboro
    1-5 (.166)
    • Win was vs. California in 2017

Average score vs. Indiana, California and Edinboro
    31-44
    • The fewest points allowed in those six games was 34 vs. Indiana (2017)

Average margin of defeat vs. Indiana, California and Edinboro
    16.8

Those numbers lead me to believe that, after the loss to Shippensburg, we are staring at a 7-4 record (at best), a third- or fourth-place finish in the West and nowhere near a playoff berth.

I won't pretend to know your coach or team better than you do but Slippery Rock was in a position to win that game, would you still be posting this if they didn't fumble that last snap and they won the game? I am not sure you can put that loss on the coach unless you think maybe the qb should have been under center in that situation? It was just a crazy ending...

I don't normally comment on refs but I admit that crew shouldn't even be officiating a high school game let alone a college game, to put it nicely they had a very bad game...

No, I would not have posted this had we won yesterday (this post likely would have appeared Sunday, Oct. 14). However, this was the proverbial straw that broke the camel's back. The alums (the ones that I know and attend games with) have been frustrated with him for awhile. And it is not just the games we lose where we can't believe what we are seeing. Last week against Kentucky State, he made multiple decisions that could have cost us that win (foregoing field goal attempts in the red zone, not punting in obvious punting situations, etc.). Luckily, the kids never quit and won the game.

To answer your question, yes, we should have been under center. 47 seconds later, Shippensburg was in an almost identical situation and the Red Raiders lined up their quarterback under center and won the game. I do not blame our players for that loss.

We now have three whine fest threads from Slimey, Bloom and Mon Valley U fans about how the good old days are gone.

Remember when everyone told IUP fans to get over the fact our good old days were gone?

When the legendary coach steps down...things do change and not usually for the better.

So the fans in Butler, Washington and Columbia Counties need to suck it up.

    Nothing lasts forever.

Yinz are whining. Boo hoo hoo it’s not 2009 anymore. The current President hates foosball. Waaaaa.

Mini Me can’t coach. He doesn’t know how to dance on the oppositions field. Waaaaa.

Why can’t Danny’s coaches be like Danny. Why do we hate our players one week and love them the next. Why aren’t we winning like we used to? Waaaaaa.

Yeah. It’s whining. We get it because we went through it after Frank was forced out and we suffered through the mediocrity of The Lou Tepper years. But we were told to get over it. That the landscape had changed. Youse were right. And that truth still applies.

Get over it. Or better yet, donate some of your bank account and help it get better.

Yes, we all know that IUP is the D2 offspring of Harvard (education)and Alabama (football).

The East is on the upswing so far or the good teams are balanced between the divisions as opposed to the lopsided power in favor of the West.

Thought that before the season based on the schedule; only 8 seniors; thought next year would be the year anyhow

0-2 in Homecoming games as well

Spends more time arguing with the refs during a game; than preparing for the next play.

BUT he is not going anywhere soon; as it has been pointed out many times on this board it is very difficult to fire a PSAC coach. BTW did anybody see Penn State in the shotgun while on their own 2 against Pitt; it is just how offenses are run in the spread, even in the victory formation last week against Kentucky St. they were in the shotgun. The chance to fumble a center/quarterback exchange would probably be the same when you don't practice it.

The loss and the way they lost hurts.. But even more importantly moving forward are the injuries, starting QB, stud running back and best DL went out with injuries and all look significant. Now the perceived winnable games may not be.

The other reality is at any good program a coach is measured in big games. The rest he's just expected to win. Reference Curt Cignetti at IUP. Good tenure, but, ...

Lutz has also been blown out by IUP twice. That doesn't sit well with the (Dr.) Evil Empire.

It was one score game going into the 4th quarter last year; not a blowout.

Have the now forming Rock Angry Mob contact the dormant IUP Angry Mob for a possible implement of destruction and shed rental. The IUP Angry Mob's implements of destruction and shed are all refurbished and spit shined to perfection because their use within the foreseeable future is not anticipated despite the Homer prophesies. Just make sure said rentals are returned in the condition as originally rented.

That loss to Edinboro two years ago was a fluke. That was a damn good Rock team and the year almost everything went Edinboro's way. As you may recall, two Rock QBs were knocked out of the game plus Edinboro got almost every call possible including the untimed down that resulted in the game winning touchdown.

Unfortunately for Lutz he doesn't get an asterisk for fluke losses. Win or lose. The 'how' or 'why' doesn't really matter. History remembers one stat.
