Thanks for bumping this back up Tundra.

Didn't realize Fieber had retired so to speak and we'll be rolling the dice with a new QB this fall. Interested in seeing how Butler and Martin respond tomorrow evening. Unless Coach A and company bring in a guy this summer, sounds like its Butler's opportunity to step up after a couple seasons behind guys. Losing Max will be a huge hole but the stable of guys who got action last season when Max went down should pay dividends. O-line you only lose a 4-year starter in Jesse Springer (Zim's article incorrectly mentioned AG, who graduated the year prior), but will still have veteran leadership from guys like Trey Pipkins, who's started what seems like forever. Love the depth this group has been able to build the last few years. Can't say I know enough about the other skill guys to comment. Can our WRs get rid of their slick hands from last season??

Defensively, Coach A nailed it in the article, depth is huge for this team. Lose 9 starters, but played 20 guys. That's been coach's halmark for years, rotating guys like crazy. Who will step up to be this season's game changer like Gardneck last season, Mehling 2016, or St. Pierre/Tidwell in 2015?? Dykstra, Grantham, Stout??

Finally looks like some gorgeous weather back home for the guys to fly around tomorrow night and get the edge outta their system til August. Game is at 6:30pm, get out and do some tailgating at the Bob and watch some football Cougars. Standard has been raised once again for this upcoming season. Last year the playoff berth was somewhat unexpected (by me anyway) and the guys were a few plays from capturing another conference title. Excited to see what they do this year.

PS - I suppose I could poke around and ask but since I'm monologuing about football in April instead of working I'll pose it here... any word on the Coo's fundraising and target date for getting to 36 schollys??? Witt perhaps?

Due to an unexpected funeral scheduled for this evening, I won't be able to make the spring game.

If anyone on the board does, please feel free to post any highlights.

I know last year's spring game things didn't look so hot, but then we wound up with a pretty successful 2017 season.

This is my question as well. I know they just did a giving day that just did well. Upping football scholarship money means money has to be added for the women as well? So if USF was to get 200k additional per yr, thats 100k to the women, 100k to football? At 20k per yr, that's 5 additional fb scholarships divided out however the program deems?

What would be better use, 5 full scholarship players (FCS level guys or D1 transfers) , or adding 10 quality players that with scholarship+aid get 60-70%? What gets usf to that next level? Personally I think it's getting more top level guys.

Yes. MSU is dealing with the same problem.

Most athletes want the highest level possible so use $ to Top Level Transfer guys.

Bumping this thread so it doesn't get lost to congratulate the Coo for finishing a program best 4th in the NSIC all sports standings!! Good work everyone! Solid finish for the smallest school in the league.

Scouring the Twitters over lunch and the Coo will have a new linebackers/special teams coach this fall. Adam Breske has moved on to Idaho (interestingly, coaching under his father, the Vandal's DC) and USF has hired Joe Ford for the same position. Ford comes from UNC-Pembroke (bio below) where he's been since 2015; previously, all his coaching stops were in the NSIC footprint. Before my time, but his bio states he started his playing career at USF, 1998 all-conference kick returner in the old SDIC, before playing at SDSU. Looks like a solid replacement!

EDIT: Adding link to USF release:
    http://usfcougars.com/news/2018/6/5/...or-at-usf.aspx

Also, during coaching changes I always enjoy seeing how these guys are connected to the current staff, school, etc. Like Breske getting to coach with his Dad at Idaho or Ford coming back to USF. Coaching is no different than any other "it's all about who you know" occupation, just easier to see that with online bios and tweets. Also, coaches' twitter feeds make me laugh when they switch schools. One day they're retweeting and tweeting everything about one school, 3 days later, their new school. I mean the wise Ferris Bueller one said "Life moves pretty fast..."

I'm liking three of the new players as big additions on the this ur for the coo. Qb Cade Walter's 6'2 200 from Dodge City Juco has a gun for an arm. WR Nate Johnson from palomar college is a big, fast playmaker that I've been waiting to see for the coo. DE Aaron Ortiz 6'2" 245 from coffeyville cc looks like a baller as well.

Want to give a shoutout to USF senior WR Riley Waldie and athletic trainer Sam Lang for receiving the 2018 South Dakota Athletic Trainers' Association (SDATA) Iron Will Award!! The "SDATA Iron Will Award serves to honor outstanding athletes who have successfully returned to competition following a serious athletic injury. It also serves to honor the certified athletic trainer who played a major role in working with the athlete."

Athletic Trainer Sam Lang has been with USF since the D2 move and she's been a fantastic AT. She's a calming and caring presence on the sideline. Coach Mathers, Lang, and all the student volunteers don't always get the accolades they deserve, and they've been a huge part of the USF's success. Cool to see them and the hard work of a recovering athlete honored. Hope to see Waldie making big plays this fall. Great work guys.

Here's a solid write-up from the athletic department detailing Waldie's recovery...

Some fun offseason reminiscing here as USF announces the next class for the USF Athletics Hall of Fame...
    http://usfcougars.com/news/2018/7/2/...l-of-fame.aspx

Football inductees include the 2008 and 2009 NAIA National Championship Teams, WR GOAT and now current Lindenwood OC Dusty Hvorka, and RB from before my time Jim Pehringer. Congrats to all inductees! Looks like they plan on honoring everyone at the October 13th game against St. Cloud. Wish I could get back for that one but would be great to see a huge turnout of former players there.

That 2008 team was something else defensively. They allowed 5.9 points per game, had 7 shutouts and was basically 8 except for a blocked PAT return that netted Dordt College of places 2 points. The 2009 team was my first on the Coo and was an absolute blast. The win over D1 UND, WR John Ryan being named POY and of course that crazy title game down in Georgia. Good times.

That 2008 USF D was the best small college defense that I've ever seen/covered. Allowing 1 yard per carry and a total of 110ypg on defense....crazy numbers. A lot of blocked punts and defensive scores as well. You can only measure an offense/defense based upon the level they play....and that group was real real good. I'm sure others have put up better stats during the modern era (with good passing games and such)....but they were very memorable.

Pleasantly surprised to see this profile from the Argus Leader on senior WR, Brandon Valley standout, oh, and grandson of Coo legend Bob Young.

    https://www.argusleader.com/story/ne...tle/775152002/

Excited to see how these skill guys click with a new QB. Also didn't realize Coach Young was battling health issues. I know he's getting up there in age and his wife had struggled in recent years but prayers for Coach to that he can shake it. I know it would take a lot to slow him down.

Zimmer making his rounds at practice this morning, "a practice that felt laid back and fun, yet still focused and productive."... Nice little kickoff to fall:
    https://www.argusleader.com/story/sp...ars/914077002/

Mentions the QB competition between Butler and the aforementioned Dodge City CC transfer Walters (Thanks Last Chance U for me actually hearing of this school), and sophomore Mitchell Martin. Really interested to see how this plays out in the coming weeks.

Congrats to Trey Pipkins who was named a First Team Preseason All-American by D2football.com!!! Trey always had great feet and was super athletic, but he has really filled out since he got on campus. Awesome to see his progression. Very deserving, excited to see him and the other 4 get to work.

No matter who is behind these guys under center, and it appears Coach A is gonna wait it out as long as possible, understandably so, I definitely feel the OL is a huge strength of this team. They played well last year. This camp also reminds me reminds me of 2013 when True freshmen Matty Young and Luke Papillion (or as the Augie radio guy would say, Pappy-On) were duking it out in camp with Cal Jacobson for the starting job. Last year's QB uncertainty didn't seem quite as publicized, and was likely overshadowed somewhat by a whole new coaching staff anyway.

It doesn't take effect until Aug 31st, so this wouldn't appear to be a firing situation.
