They also should have let AB join the conference from the start. What will they call the conference when it’s back to all WV schools only...and Shepherd is in the PSAC?
    A weak conference?

Serious question: are you a college graduate?

The IUP class of '96 probably had the most prestigious graduation speaker that ever came to campus in former PA Governor and U.S. Attorney General Dick Thornburgh.

Those are elite offices. Ask your Civics teacher if you do not believe me.

UVa-Wise has intrigued me in recent years. Seems to me they were a really late starter in football -- maybe 10, 15 years? But they appear to have gorgeous facilities.

FWIW, IUP used to get 'national circuit' graduation speakers back when it was just IUP and not part of the PASSHE. When I graduated in '81 the speaker was Alvin Toffler. Unless you've read his books, you probably won't know the name now but at the time he was a very high profile writer. Since PASSHE, they don't have the money to pay people to come speak.

Could have been a favor to Robert Wilburn, who was past IUP President and left the university to serve in Thornburgh's administration as Budget Director and later as the Secretary of Education.

Actually, truth be told, more a favor to me as he and I are related. He was really cool about it. Great dude!

He was the best one and I delivered the goods, so to speak.

Mr. Rogers in '92 had to be pretty cool as well I suppose. But he was hardly at Dick Thornburgh's level though.

The Attorney General of the United States is pretty lofty. No doubt about it. I'm glad he wanted to speak at your graduation

Didn't PASSHE come into existence during the Thornburgh administration?

I was listening to some supporters at the spring game Saturday, they saying the "buyout" to leave the MEC was $50,000.

Is the cost for the conf. loosing revenue due to SU leaving?

Does this sound like a reasonable amount?

    Thoughts.

Do you know how much Sheperd's yearly dues to the MEC are? Just curious as to how it compares to the rumored exit fee. Plus, I would think the exit fee is somewhat variable and negotiable - depending upon the amount of notice given and whether a replacement school is already lined-up.

In general, I think you would pay less with more notice and/or if the conference has a replacement school ready to go. You would likely pay more with less notice and/or if you leave them in a bad spot.

I don't see much published re the fiscals behind D2 conference moves. However, D1 conference moves are well documented and almost every one is negotiated - with the contract/bylaws requirements merely being the starting point.

    $50,000? LOL ... that's nothing.

Wonder if Wise had to pay anything.

I have to say Wise to the MEC was a disappointment.

I don't know how the PSAC does their scheduling. I know they have two divisions. Shepherd, one would assume, would be in the PSAC East to replace Cheyney. Here is an analysis of travel for both conferences since that does seem to come into play:

    PSAC East

    Shippensburg 55 miles 1 hour 6 minutes
    Millersville 107 miles 2 hours 28 minutes
    Kutztown 168 miles 2 hours 51 minutes
West Chester 166 miles 3 hours 4 minutes
    Bloomsburg 177 miles 3 hours 15 minutes
Lock Haven 194 miles 3 hours 22 minutes
East Stroudsburg 213 miles 3 hours 45 minutes
    Mansfield 223 miles 4 hours 8 minutes

    PSAC West

    UPJ 161 miles 2 hours 11 minutes
Seton Hill 163 miles 2 hours 46 minutes
    IUP 161 miles 2 hours 55 minutes
    Cal 165 miles 3 hours 3 minutes
Slippery Rock 235 miles 3 hours 56 minutes
    Clarion 224 miles 4 hours 3 minutes
    Edinboro 294 miles 4 hours 47 minutes
    Mercyhurst 311 miles 5 hours 5 minutes
    Gannon 311 miles 5 hours 6 minutes

    Mountain East

Frostburg State 92 miles 1 hour 40 minutes
Fairmont State 169 miles 2 hours 56 minutes
Wheeling Jesuit 231 miles 3 hours 51 minutes
Glenville State 241 miles 3 hours 54 minutes
WV Wesleyan 211 miles 3 hours 55 minutes
West Liberty 234 miles 4 hours 2 minutes
    Charleston 308 miles 4 hours 44 minutes
WV State 315 miles 4 hours 51 minutes
    Concord 294 miles 4 hours 53 minutes
Notre Dame 309 miles 5 hours 6 minutes
    Urbana 410 miles 6 hours 46 minutes

You can compare travel. I don't know how the PSAC schedules for East teams playing against West. Shepherd is also pretty close to some of the West schools. I included Frostburg State in the MEC calculations although I think that is far from a given considering the state of Maryland. Frostburg will have to fund those scholarships. Taking UVA-Wise out and putting Frostburg in does cut down a lot on travel for one trip to a school. This info is just food for thought.

For football, the schedule is built two years at a time. The second year of the pair is the same as the previous but with home/away flipped.

    Week 1: Open
Week 2 & 3: East vs West "Crossover"
    Week 4 - 10: East/West Divisional
Week 11: East vs West "Crossover" ...OR...PSAC Championship (the regularly scheduled teams of the PSAC championship teams play each other as a crossover)

Yeah, but the other sports are where the athletic travel budget is concerned. Football games are almost always on Saturdays. For other sports, you have to take into account missed class time. For example, basketball would be interesting to look at as far as how the PSAC schedules. MEC plays home-and-home each year in basketball. I wonder how the PSAC works.
