Default CIAA - National Signing Day

Post your school's signees for National Signing Day 2018.

I've seen a few of the verbal commits for WSSU. It seems like things have been rather quiet on the 704 front for us.

So far WSSU is keeping it local with 6 signees announced, and all from the Triad.

Apparently, Tashaun Taylor was a last minute switch. He de-committed from Catawba on Monday.

Also, we had a pretty good WR pull back early this week, probably to hold out for D-1

I'm impressed with Coach Boulware's recruiting to the point of him addressing need, which is the O-line and defense. But the interesting part of WSSU's defense last season, not one team threw over 200 yards on the defense. So what went wrong? Good to see they have at least one DB over 6'0".

Man I have to wonder was our coaching staff lazy during this process? 10 announced guys but they only represent 5 different high schools, with 4 coming from a not very good Durham Jordan team (in 2016 Jordan was 1-10 and last year 6-6). They also only have recruits from 3 counties, when NC has 100 counties. No one from Wake county, the entire Charlotte Metro area, Western NC, nor the entire Fayetteville metro area? I guess I will wait to see who is announced at a later date but man seems like they didn't reach out very far for their recruiting this year.

On the positive I do think that QB from Eastern Guilford has the potential to be a good player for us. He's a proving winner in the HS world, and he is very mobile. With a good QB coach he could be something special.

That also indicates what kind of budget he was working with. But I agree, no one from the Charlotte area? Yikes!!!!! On the QB from Eastern Guilford, you're correct, he's a good athlete, but he's going to have to work on his throwing and reading defenses. I have seen him in a few games. You can even watch the hudl footage. He doesn't have much zip on his throws and he's a "one read and fire" guy. That's not going to cut it in college. But I'm sure he can be coached up. EG coaches really didn't develop this kid. They had him doing a lot of QB runs and wildcat stuff.

Some of my hope for the EG kid is wishful thinking. I look at what VA State was able to do with Cook. If we can turn an athletic QB into a serviceable passer, and involve him in the running game with designed runs then I can live with that. With our current crop of RB's it seems like we will be a running team for years to come, so at this point I just need a QB who won't turn the ball over and can at least scramble. Lol

I understand the budget might be tight, but making a trip to Charlotte is only an hour from the school. There are too many schools and too much talent in cities like Charlotte, Raleigh, and Fayetteville not to get a single recruit. The paper says more names will be released soon, so I'm hopeful we have some players from those areas. With the number of d2 schools in our state we won't be able to rebuild our program if we are lose the recruiting edge in some of the largest metros.

....But you saw what happened to VSU once they got outside of the HBCU world. The servicable passer only works when you can have multiple looks in the running game. VSU employed that against West GA with some success. WSSU doesnt deploy that type of creative offense (or at least they didnt last couple of years). This is a team that could deploy multiple running back sets that can be successful in DII and for the life of me I dont understand why they dont do it.

It sounds like WSSU's coaching staff cant develop QBs. They can recruit players with the tools, but they cant develop them. The antithesis of WSSU are places like Bowie State and Chowan. Now defense and RB....totally different story.....

Boulware's most critical hire is going to be offensive coordinator. The wrong coordinator could get him sacked. And thats a shame given that he knows defense.

I'm not sure that he really wants to hire an OC. Co-OC's seem to work for him. I'm not sure that WSSU is going to be successful with the current staff in place. I just don't see the quality football schemes and philosophies I see at other regional schools. Also, I wonder if the transfer well is running dry. However, I do agree with your development observation. not only QB but frankly in all aspects of the game. It's the old coach not lose rather than to win philosophy.

I think that you guys have nailed it on this. I don't see motions for a new OC. I don't see motions for a new WR coach. Budgets must be really thin. Traveling to Charlotte or Raleigh is not a budget issue. You can get there and back of less than a half of tank of gas from WS. This was a conscious effort....IMHO. Why would be the real question. More to come, I'm sure.

Remember two things: 1: WSSU mentioned that they needed to cut athletic budgets last year. 2. Most CIAA Schools save scholarship money for Transfers, so he may have something in the pipeline. WSSU's team had alot of younger players in the last couple of years.

His dad works at VSU if I'm not mistaken. Must've been what got him to flip from the JuCo he committed to.
