Default ODU plays at Ivy League Penn this year

    On 9/16, interesting game.

ODU opens with three straight road games now, trying to get a home game for 9/23

Here's a question when's the last time an IVY League school has played up or down in competition. Can't remember a IVY League school playing a D2 opponent in recent memory. If Penn is willing to pay D2 members to come take a trip to Franklin Field why won't they accept a payday from a FBS program while they certainly don't need the money they almost certainly would be allowing their team the great experience of playing at an historic venue like Doake Stadium (Florida State), Denny Bryant (Alabama), or play in state members Temple or Pittsburgh.

Penn probably doesn't want to get curbed stomped by an FBS team. Honestly rather see the Ivies take on the CAA schools in OOC play.

DI-A/FBS teams' games against non-scholarship DI-AA/FCS teams don't count for bowl eligibility. Penn was scheduled to play DI-AA/FCS Jacksonville (who they played on the road in 2014) on 9/16, but Jacksonville pulled out of the game, leaving Penn scrambling to find an opponent. They were willing to play Ohio Dominican to fill that hole in their schedule.

Apparently, ODU will host Lake Erie on 9/23, leaving both teams with 10/14 open.

Maybe Penn will trot out one of it's alumni and have Donald Trump at the coin toss...say what ya want but that would be pretty bad ass!!

Virginia State was trying to schedule ODU but VSU wanted a home game. I would think that ODU would have gotten a guarantee for this game.

You know, this presents an interesting question...

One the one hand, if you're ODU and you play Penn I almost can't fathom that the guarantee isn't significantly larger than if you play VSU. Plus, there is a bit of a marketing appeal to playing an Ivy League school, and there is a neat "experience factor" for the kids in getting to play at Franklin Field.

On the other, VSU presents the chance to get another game against a D-II opponent. With ODU now in the G-MAC, playing a opponent from Virginia would count as "in-region" game. And, if VSU is able to perform similar to the 9-2 mark they posted last year you like the odds that a game against them would bolster your strength-of-schedule. Add to that that I would like my chances to get a win against VSU (I'd say a solid 50/50 at least vs. having almost none against Penn), and a VSU tilt would have been compelling.

It's an interesting scenario...a game that almost certainly improves your playoff resume, or a money game? Can't say that either answer is wrong, and we don't know "who knows who at what school" or anything like that. Travel for each is essentially a wash, so that like wasn't a factor.
