    Default Rankings

Now that we are several weeks into the season, the computer rankings are starting to make more sense. I find it interesting how much variance they can have depending on their methodology and wanted to capture some "screenshots" over the season to compare them. Here's today's numbers. The first column represents ranking within the region, the last column averages the four ranking systems to give us an average ranking within the region.

This is really great! You're right... the differences -- even just looking at the four different "best" teams in the region -- is quite substantial and shows how much of a toss-up everything is at this point. Teams with good records might have really bad schedules; teams with pretty good records have played really good schedules; then a mix and match of everything else in between.

I've never understood the Bennett rankings as far as why they're always so different. I see no reason we (KWC) should be ranked higher than USI or Bellarmine. Especially USI ... they beat us head to head and are undefeated! Bennett is also always very heavy with the West Coast teams. I don't get what they calculate so different from the others that causes that.

Until this week, I agree with you, but suddenly they have shifted out of the "west heavy" rankings. I don't know how or why, but at one point a couple weeks ago, there were several 4-loss teams in their top 20, all of them being west coast. But it appears that they've fixed that now.

It looks to me that Massey is very Midwest-heavy this year, or at least at this point in the season.

Looks like the average is doing a pretty good job of identifying the contenders. I'd say the top 12 are pretty much the teams that will be contending for the regional. I would also throw Lewis into the mix.
All the number crunching aside, I think any knowledgeable person could have identitied these 13 teams before the season started. I still believe that there will be very little difference between any of the ranked teams when the first and last regional rankings come out.

For those who like charts (maybe that's just me, but I don't care), here's a visual of the NABC Coaches Poll over the season. (The teams listed at the right side are those who have been ranked at least once in the last 5 years).
It would appear that having some variant of red/maroon/crimson as one of your team colors seems to help.

This week we've got 8 teams mentioned in the NABC coaches poll with 4 in the top 25. We had 9 mentioned in the preseason, but dropped to only 3 in the first week. Midwest region is starting to shape up to its normal presence in the polls.

I want to be very serious, really. IMO, the Midwest region could be or is the best region in the country. Here is why. It is time for this region to produce a National Champion this year and they can. That would be great for all the teams in this region.

The teams in this region have some really good coaches and support staff, especially in the top 8 to 10 programs. Most all of them can, have, or will coach on the D1 level.

These staffs are very smart and so are the players. The top 8 teams in this region could easily compete, play, and win big in Mid Major conferences as they are now in D2. If the programs went D1, their profile may even cause teams to be worse. D2 student athletes are very smart students overall, and go on to be great professionals. That would be the case on the Mid major level only. I am not saying they can compete with the Major conferences.

The good teams and outstanding teams in the Midwest region are beginning to get a lot of exposure, and respect. Great programs have great social media platforms, and that is starting to effect D2. People want to cheer for the underdog, or at least will show interest and curiosity.

The top teams in this region, when playing well, are highly entertaining. Just so many players in the Midwest region have that look about them where you know when they step on the court they mean business, and they look the part.

The deal is, I think the champion that goes to the Elite 8 will show how different this region is, how competitive it is, and how teams will fear playing them. The top teams in this region should fear each other, and they do. However, fear does not damper the desire to compete. Fear is part of athletic competition, but at a certain point it turns into a legal fight. Now, that's great basketball.

The Perf Indicator shows 9 teams in the top 64, which means this region has an above average chance of winning the Elite 8 and National Championship.

Massey has 14 teams from this region in the top 64. Mind you the average would be 8. There could be a slight schew. I understand that. Still, I want to point out the possibilities of these rankings.

Bennett gives the Midwest region 8 teams in the top 64.

The rankings definitely prove the region has a better than average chance to win the Elite 8. It also shows you the level of competition in the region is good.

Wilson places 10 in the top 64.

I see teams getting better. I definitely believe this season will enhance the future of the region.

In all honesty, I think the Atlantic or West regions have just of good a chance as the Midwest does this year. They may not have the depth that the Midwest has, but they've got a handful of teams that are very good this year.

After last night's games, here is my breakdown of regions by counting how many teams are rated top-64

PI's (probably the worst metric for comparing regions)
    Atlantic - 8
    Central - 7
    East - 10
    Midwest - 8
    South - 5
    South Central - 9
    Southeast - 8
    West - 10

    Massey
    Atlantic - 7
    Central - 12
    East - 3
    Midwest - 14
    South - 3
    South Central - 11
    Southeast - 3
    West - 11

Wilson (VERY west heavy this season. I question it's validity this year. Like having a 9-9 team at #27. Also missing some games)
    Atlantic - 6
    Central - 11
    East - 4
    Midwest - 10
    South - 4
    South Central - 9
    Southeast - 2
    West - 18

    Bennett (Also West-heavy)
    Atlantic - 7
    Central - 11
    East - 0
    Midwest - 8
    South - 4
    South Central - 13
    Southeast - 3
    West - 17

The Central region is hosting the Elite 8 if I remember correctly. That certainly is not hurting that region. All I was really saying is the Midwest has a better than average chance to win the national title.

Massey is really the gold standard in athletic ratings.

While each system has it's flaws...I'd say that I pretty much agree with the "AVERAGE" column's top end.

As usual it's apparent that there are multiple tournament-worthy teams that will have to be left out from our region again this year. Ashland, Indy (now), Mich Tech (now), Lake Superior, to name a few. Especially with Indy and Mich Tech, their poor performance early in the season will have sunk them if they don't rally and end up winning their conference tourneys.
