The CIAA 2017 Wrapup

by Kris Ferguson on 12-31-2017 at 01:36 AM
This past season was certainly one for the ages. There are many superlatives to pass around, and much to talk about as teams are now in the recruiting stages and seniors walk across the main stage one last time. After seeing awards season go by, I have a few things to say.

In the first year in Super Region 2, the conference was able to get two teams into the playoff field. Both were outed in the first round, but both Virginia State and Bowie State gave their opponents all they

CIAA - NCAA Playoffs Week 1

by Kris Ferguson on 11-17-2017 at 10:57 PM
Last weekend was a jaw dropper. I’m not referring to the CIAA Championship game which featured an overmatched Fayetteville State team; instead, the playoffs selections were made on Sunday and the committee selected an astounding FOUR Gulf South Conference schools for playoff slots. The selections were pretty disheartening for Catawba and Tuskegee in particular, as West Florida’s win over West Georgia catapulted the Argonauts from the 10th seed to the 6th seed. The UWF-UWG game resulted in

CIAA Championship Week and All-Conference Controversies

by Kris Ferguson on 11-10-2017 at 07:22 PM
Let’s play a game.

Suppose I were to give you a couple of stat lines. Who would you choose as an all-conference player?

Player #1: 49 Tackles, 1.5 Sacks, 2 Tackles for loss, and No interceptions

Player #2: 40 Tackles, 1 Sack, 3 Tackles for loss, and 1 interception

Player #3: 70 Tackles, 2 sacks, 13.5 Tackles for Loss, 2 interceptions

Times up.

Most people are likely to choose player 3. You’ll know

CIAA Week 10 - It's Rivalry Week!

by Kris Ferguson on 11-03-2017 at 09:02 AM
Well my friends, the end is near. For most schools, the season will end a week earlier than the rest of Division II. Why? Schools in the CIAA generally only schedule a 10 game schedule as opposed to 11 games throughout the other conferences in the nation. This is my normal plug for schools to schedule 11 games. Do something for the 11th game. Perhaps a PSAC-style crossover game for the last game of the season could work. One fan has proposed a CIAA-SIAC challenge to end the season, which I

CIAA Week 9 - The Stars Steal the Show

by Kris Ferguson on 10-27-2017 at 10:58 PM
With two weeks left in the regular season, there’s a number compelling storylines to cover. It’s been five years since the conference has had a legit threat to win the Harlon Hill trophy. For those who aren’t familiar, the trophy is the Division II equivalent of the Heisman, and is awarded to the Division’s most outstanding player. This year, we have Bowie State Quarterback Amir Hall and Virginia State Running Back Trenton Cannon as the conference’s most outstanding players through
