PSAC Week 4

This is it! Divisional play in the PSAC, over the next seven weeks, the teams in the west will play seven games and the teams in the east six do to Cheyney dropping football. This week the off team is the Kutztown Golden Bears, off to a 3-0 start Coach Clements has his team rolling and they will be a major factor in the PSAC east race. As we get going with the divisional play we see some of our traditional rivalries renewed. We get to enjoy the excitement of college Homecoming celebrations, and the beautiful fall foliage as we travel the commonwealth enjoying another season of PSAC football.

During the preseason post I ranked the 15 PSAC teams; since we are now past the ¼ poll let’s take a look at where the teams stand now.
Ranking/ school/ record /previous ranking

PSAC Power Rankings !

1. IUP 3-0 (1)
2. West Chester 3-0 (3)
3. Edinboro 3-0 (5)
4. Kutztown 3-0 (4)
5. Shippensburg 2-1 (2)
6. Slippery Rock 2-1 (7)
7. California 1-2 (6)
8. Clarion 2-1 (13)
9. Mercyhurst 1-2 (9)
10. Bloomsburg 1-2 (10)
11. East Stroudsburg 1-2 (12)
12. Gannon 0-3 (8)
13. Seton Hill 0-3 (15)
14. Lock Haven 0-3 (11)
15. Millersville 0-3 (14)

Of the preseason top 5 Shippensburg is the only team to drop a game in the opening three weeks. Only Clarion has done enough to climb from outside the top ten to inside the top ten at the number 8 ranking this week, Of the teams outside the top ten only Gannon has a chance to really make a push and make major noise as the season progresses.

Out of Conference game storylines:

As we come to start division play let’s take a look back at some of the biggest story’s of the opening weeks.

• PSAC had two huge out of league wins in week 1, IUP over Ashland & Kutztown over Assumption. Both of these games will carry weight as we move forward this season and head toward the playoffs.
• Fabulous Freshman, even leading a team to a 1-2 California Quarterback Noah Mitchell has set the league ablaze in the opening three weeks. Throwing for over one thousand yards in his first three starts.
• Two heavyweight programs, West Chester the favorite in the East and IUP in the West, both programs are off to great starts and are setting up for great runs this fall.

Week 4 Matchups:

Millersville (0-3) @ #13/18 West Chester (3-0)
• This could be the biggest mismatch of the weekend, The Golden Rams are the top dog in the east and Millersville is fighting to find a positive. Last season WCU only had a 3 point victory over Millersville; expect this week to not be as close. The pick WCU 45 Ville 21

Gannon (0-3) @ Clarion (2-1)
• This is a sneaky good game this weekend. For both of these programs this game is pivotal, for Gannon the heat is starting to turn up on Head coach Brad Rzyczycki. The Golden Knights need to turn this season around before it slips away from them entirely. Clarion on the other hand is rolling, after a tough opener they have rattled off back to back victories and have an opportunity to continue on to start PSAC west action with Gannon and Seton Hill the first two weeks. Expect Gannon to finally get the breaks and show some heart, too much talent on the Golden Knight for the Golden Eagles to match up for 60 minutes. The Pick GU 33 Clarion 24

Seton Hill (0-3) @ Slippery Rock (2-1)
• Seton Hill started out tough in the first two weeks, great effort only to fall short, last week they ran into a buzz saw in the Golden Rams of West Chester. Slippery Rock is the better program but they have most definitely shown some holes this season. After the disappointment at Shippensburg two weeks ago the Rock showed discipline and heart as they cruised past Millersville 57-10 last week. Seton Hill has the number 3 ranked passing game in the PSAC after three weeks and will look to pass their way to an upset this weekend. The Pick SRU 41 Seton Hill 35

Lock Haven (0-3) @ East Stroudsburg (1-2)
• ESU and Lock Haven both struggled last weekend and both would love to rebound this weekend. Lock Haven seems to be a very excited bunch and they seem to be the more energetic bunch this season. PSAC legend Denny Douds will have the Warriors ready when the Bald Eagles come to visit. The Pick ESU 27 LHU 14

Mercyhurst (1-2) @ #3/4 IUP (3-0)
• This is hard to say because this season IUP has been on cruise control but this could be a “trap” game. Mercyhurst reminds me of Northwestern in the Big10, always well coached, always a tough matchup. This is a hardnosed team the Lakers have put on the field this season, after back to back close games they finally broke through last week with a 14-10 win over Bloomsburg. IUP has rolled the pasted two weeks and have the talent to continue that this week. Expect Lenny Williams to really start to put up even more stats now that divisional play begins. The Pick IUP 21 Mercyhurst 14

Shippensburg (2-1) @ Bloomsburg (1-2)

• Two proud programs, one that just got beat up at home, one looking for answers to avoid a losing season for the first time since 1998. Shippensburg lost 57-14 last week and in one of the best parts of athletics they get a chance to rebound only seven days later. Both of these programs are starting a very important and tough three game stretch. Shippensburg has a three game stretch at Bloomsburg, at West Chester and LIU Post at home. Bloomsburg has a three game run with Shippensburg, Kutztown and West Chester the next three weeks. This makes this match up even more pivotal for these teams. Expect Shippensburg to rebound and Bloomsburg to continue looking for answers. The pick Shippensburg 35 Bloomsburg 17

Game of the Week :

Edinboro (3-0) @ California (1-2)
• 2004, the last time Edinboro won a football game against the Vulcans of California. A lot has changed in the past 14 years, many of the players that will be on the field this week were only in Kindergarten or first grade the last time the Fighting Scots won in the series. This year could be the year the streaks ends, Running back Walter Fletcher is averaging 119 yards per game and the Scots are the top scoring team in the league. Even more impressive than Fletchers start is the pass defense the Scots bring into the game with 10 interceptions in the opening three weeks. The only question on the Scots resume is in the quality of the wins they have racked up. The teams they have played have a record of 2-7 , on the other hand the Vulcans come in battle tested with opponents with a 7-2 record. California is led by Freshman Quarterback Noah Mitchell, the #2 overall passer in D2 Mitchell has been very impressive to open his college carrier. The Pick California 35 Edinboro 31

This is setting up to be a great weekend all across the PSAC, this is the time of year we all wait for with excitement. The message board chatter has picked up the last few weeks and you can tell we are starting divisional play this week. Safe travels to everyone this weekend enjoy the games; support the kids as the battle for victories this weekend.
