Regional Rankings are a joke. Week 8 preview

Rate this Entry
So I'm sure by now you have seen the regional rankings. What a slap in the face to Winston Salem State and the CIAA! How in the world can Shippensburg be ranked ahead of WSSU if The Rams are ranked #4 in the D2Football.com poll and #2 in the AFCA poll while Shippensburg is ranked 13th?

I'm angered. Wait, more than angered, I'm pissed off!!!!! Yes I said it, I'M PISSED OFF!!!! Two years ago, I could understand, but last year, WSSU made it all the way to the national semi-finals. They have played a solid schedule, especially non-conference, and somehow, you think Shippensburg is better ranked than Winston Salem State? ARE YOU FREAKING KIDDING ME?

I actually had to cool off for a few days before I typed because I was on the verge of losing my religion. First, you let Northwest Missouri leapfrog WSSU in the polls, now you vote Shippensburg ahead of Winston in the regional rankings.

Lets imagine the current regional rankings stay on track and the season finishes off as is. See regional Rankings below.

Super Region 1

Team D2 Overall
1. Shippensburg 8-0 8-0
2. Winston-Salem 8-0 8-0
3. Bloomsburg 8-0 8-0
4. California 7-1 7-1
5. New Haven 7-0 7-0
6. Charleston 7-1 7-1
7. IUP 7-1 7-1
8. Shepherd 6-2 6-2
9. American International 6-1 6-1
10. West Chester 5-2 5-3

If our region, SR1 stays the same and both Shippensburg and WSSU win out, that means WSSU will eventually have to travel north and play an away game in Pennsylvania. Which is a huge possibility. Thats a big advantage for Shippensburg, and if WSSU wins at Shippensburg, the would play the higher seeded team in the other region on the road.

So I'm curious to know how these votes takes place? Who are these people voting? Where did they go to school? Why do you consistently disrespect WSSU and the CIAA? Didn't WSSU slap around California (PA) and New Haven last year in the playoffs? Are your memories that short or are you just in denial that an HBCU just slapped around your school last year? What is it for crying out loud?

Folks, this is not just a gripe for WSSU fans and alums, this is a gripe for all HBCU alums, for all CIAA alums.

This week, I'm taking the "Less is more" approach.

The only thing I can think of is because the CIAA is generally crappy this year and the PSAC is a lot stronger from top to bottom. However Ship and Bloom will have to play each other I think and if so the region will sort itself out. Unless they leapfrog the winner of that game over WSSU. I can say this the Rams aren't really concerned about this right now. I think they believe they can play anywhere and get the job done. By the time the playoff roll around State will be the top seed.

I think if Bloomsburg wins, they will leapfrog WSSU. and since the PSAC has a championship game also, the winner can more than likely be a #1 seed even with one loss. More weight needs to be considered for the rankings. WSSU having to travel into a hostile environment for a quarterfinal and semi-final game, which is not good.

Well politics aside and there are a lot of politics at work here. I do think they can go on the road a win. Alot of these schools especially in the PSAC don't have what would I call football cathedrials for stadiums. Most of them are mulit purpose fields and are not even as big as Durham county statdium. Bloom only holds 7700, ship holds 5000 DCS holds 8k. I don't think they will be intimidated on the road. It's going to be fun to find out though.

Gil and the CIAA Nation, I wrote Bob Eblen yesterday and expressed the same sentiments written here. Since we only have 500 words I will not paste the email, but trust me I blew him up! It is pure politics that we are witnessing with the 1st Regional Rankings. WSSU, the defending SR1 Champ... a 2 seed, C'mon Man!

How childish, emotional and uneducated of you. And you go from "how these votes takes place?" to "
if Bloomsburg wins, they will leapfrog WSSU
". Any chance the polls that you referemce have overrated WSSU? Nope, because that would spoil your rant. Do know that last year's playoff results have nothing to do with this year's rankings. And also, only the rankings at the end of the regular season really matter.

Miles College is the #1 seed in SR2 but not even ranked in the D2 top 25 poll? Gil, I'm like you... the more I think about it the more steamed I get! It just shows how biased these media types are toward the CIAA and HBCU football in general. If our Rams continue to take care of business, we'll put the naysayers out of business. Rams 4 Life!

Excuse you... first, this is a blog and their opinion is just that, their opinion. For you to JUMP in our conversation with smart-alecky comments shows your arrogance and lack of home training. We got your uneducated... It is real easy to talk big and hide behind a blog id, but you WILL NOT disrespect our opinions on this blog, Period!

You unknowingly make our point... not only are we better than last year, our Strength of Schedule is higher. The Coaches poll recognizes real teams and since yours is nowhere in sight I'll take that as confirmation that you don't want any piece of us.

You guys make our point. Since we have not been a "national power" and those who have are now floundering you can't stand on past mathematical calculations. Yet that is what the polls are doing. We (non-traditional powers) somehow have to break through an invisible barrier to get deserved recognition. GVSU understands that.

Ummm.....GV was ranked #1 in 01 and 02 in the RRs. If it wasn't math, then they (GV) should have made the playoffs last year. It is all math nothing more nothing less. A computer spits it out. The d2 poll the AFCA poll means nothing to the RRs.

I feel ya Dave, but here is my problem with the "Math". It is a weighted formula and favors the so-called power conferences. GVSU didn't make the playoff's last season because of the "timing" of your loss. The "Math" still favored GVSU making the playoff's verses a school from the SIAC or CIAA. That's the part you're missing, yeah its the Math, but the formula is not weighted evenly.

Everything will work out, as long as we win out we should be 2 or better. Just think how UNH has to be feeling right now. It's a giving that the SOS out of the PSAC is better, so it shouldn't be a surprise that if you have two undefeated teams then the one with the tougher schedule will get ranked higher. I'm hoping that we get the #1 seed and can stay at home but right now all we can do is just win each game we play.

or maybe the polls have over rated the PSAC, let the trash talking begin.

I think all the gripes go away if Bloom takes care of business this weekend. I watched some of the Ship-vs-Shepard game on line and the while they (Ship) are a good team I don't think they could beat WSSU head to head. Biased probably but I think it's a valid take. I would love to hear a Ship fan's take as the two teams are on a collision course.

Just as an FYI, we are volunteers, we do this for free, so this blog tough guy can use his lack of home training to insult me, i'll let him. Fact is, last year all these PSAC folks were talking major trash until WSSU humbled them all. Cal PA, SPANKED, New Haven, SPANKED!!!

I also can't see there being much "politics" involved. The NCAA is out to make as much money as they can. We were #9 in attendance last year (this year our average is over 9K), and SRU was the only other school out of Region 1 to make the top 30. I would think if politics really mattered then the NCAA would want us at #1 to host more home games and make more money. We didn't start out as #1 with the rankings last year so no point at getting mad yet, lets just let the chips fall where they may.
